European Commission (EC) - New Rules for Common Charger for Electronic Devices

October, 2022

The European Commission had introduced the legislative proposal in September 2021 to harmonize charging ports and fast charging technology. On October 4, 2022, the European Parliament voted in favor of harmonizing charging ports for all mobile phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU. By the end of 2024, these devices must be equipped with USB Type-C charging ports. In spring 2026, new laptops must also be equipped with USB Type-C charging ports. These decisions came as part of the EU effort to reduce e-waste and provide more sustainable options for consumers. EU Member states will have 12 months to transpose the new rules, and another 12 months to apply the rules after the transposition period ends. These new rules will not apply to products placed on the market prior to the date these rules are applied.
