The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) published a notice amending Annexure B of the Radio Frequency Spectrum Regulations 2015 on May 23, 2023. This amendment opens the lower 6 GHz frequency band (5925-6425 MHz) for Radio Local Access Networks (RLAN) and Wi-Fi applications.
Additionally, the 122-246 GHz frequency band has been incorporated for Non-Specific Short-Range applications. The inclusion of this range of spectrum reduces latency and interference, allows for more simultaneous connections, and improves wireless communication for users in high-density areas.
EMC and Safety requirements for relevant applications will remain mandatory, and refer to the standards laid out in ICASA’s Official List of Regulated Standards. This amendment is now in effect.
