The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has launched a public consultation (open until August 20, 2025) on the allocation design and technical parameters for the 2 GHz Mobile-Satellite Service (MSS) frequency band (1980–2010 MHz uplink and 2170–2200 MHz downlink).
This consultation aims to define the regulatory framework for MSS in Australia, including licensing, allocation methodology, auction format, and technical considerations for satellite and complementary ground components.
The 2 GHz band is being replanned to support:
2 x 25 MHz for Australia-wide MSS, including complementary ground components and direct air-to-ground communications.
2 x 5 MHz for shared narrowband MSS, such as satellite IoT and low-data-rate services.
Stakeholder feedback will directly inform the development of allocation rules, technical parameters, and related policies.
