On March 17, 2025, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued Notice No. 66, announcing the abolition of two key regulatory documents governing the use of the 40-50 GHz frequency band. These documents, originally published in 2013, authorized the use of this high-frequency spectrum for:
Point-to-point wireless access systems in fixed services, and
Broadband wireless access systems in mobile services.
Effective January 1, 2026, MIIT and all radio management agencies will no longer accept or approve new applications for the use of the 40-50 GHz band under these categories. Existing systems that were legally approved may continue operating until they reach end-of-life.
This policy shift reflects MIIT’s broader goal of improving radio spectrum efficiency and supporting the high-quality development of China’s wireless industry, potentially reallocating these high-frequency bands for future technologies such as 6G or advanced satellite communications.
