FCC Ensures Maritime Radio Safety on the Great Lakes with Rule Amendments

In this order, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is amending its rules to maintain safety standards for vessels on the Great Lakes. They are making these changes because the Great Lakes Agreement (GLA), which established radiocommunications equipment requirements for such vessels, will cease to be effective in November 2023. The FCC is removing references to the GLA to ensure the continuity of safety rules on the Great Lakes and regulatory stability. Additionally, the FCC is extending the inspection interval for radiotelephone installations from once every 13 months to once every 48 months to align with Canadian regulations and industry needs, which is supported by the U.S. Coast Guard.
