The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt announced that, starting February 1, 2025, new mobile phones that do not meet internationally approved standards will be banned from activation. This decision aims to protect consumer rights, ensure service quality, and safeguard public health.
NTRA emphasized that mobile phones that fail to comply with these standards, particularly those set by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), negatively impact service quality and may pose risks to users. The authority urges consumers to verify that new phones meet the required standards by checking the 15-digit IMEI number using the "Telephony" app before purchasing.
This regulation aligns with Egypt’s Telecommunication Regulation Law, which prohibits the import, manufacture, or sale of non-compliant telecommunications devices, aiming to maintain high standards in the country’s telecom services.
