FCC Adds Foreign-Produced Routers to Covered List with Conditional Exemptions

On March 23, 2026, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a public notice stating that certain routers are being added to its Covered List. The update applies to consumer grade routers that are produced outside the United States.

In this notice, “foreign produced” includes routers where key stages such as design, development, manufacturing, or assembly take place outside the U.S. Because of this, new models of these routers will generally not be approved for entry into the U.S. market.

There is an exception for routers that receive Conditional Approval from relevant U.S. government authorities. Devices with this approval are exempt and can still obtain FCC authorization.

The change does not apply to devices that were already authorized before the notice. Those routers can continue to be sold and used.
